Metatags

Meta tags provide information about the webpage in the HTML of the document. This information is called "metadata" and while it is not displayed on the page itself, it can be read by search engines and web crawlers.

For site's using the Web Theme, a meta description is added to each page. The meta description is a snippet of up to about 155 characters – a tag in HTML – which summarizes a page's content. Search engines show the meta description in search results mostly when the searched-for phrase is within the description, so optimizing the meta description is crucial for on-page SEO.

Extras

For site's who do a lot of sharing, especially social sharing and events, there are a number of supporting modules that exist that can help tailor the content to be displayed in the most optimal way for that particular platform. The supporting modules are attached to the Metatags module but are not activated. If the following extras seem appropriate, please consider enabling them and testing.

  • OpenGraph helps customize content for FB
  • Twitter Cards help tailor the image and text to fit properly in a tweet.

If your Web Theme site pages will be shared on social media, ensure those pages have at least one image.
